This unit is designed to help students understand how to be a selfless friend. They are often encouraged by the lessons to evaluate their personal friendships and interactions with friends in order to determine whether they are participating in and/or initiating the kinds of friendships that would reflect the character of Christ.
Lesson 1: A Friend in Need--This lesson examines the value of availability in a friend and introduces the Old Testament model of the exemplary friendship between Jonathan and David. (1 Samuel 19:1-7; 20:1-42; Proverbs 16:28; 17:9)
Lesson 2: A Friend from the Heart--A lesson that continues to reference Jonathan and David's friendship and coining the term "the Jonathan Principle" to demonstrate the detailed characteristics of "authentic friendship." (1 Samuel 17:55-18:5; 23:15-18)
Lesson 3: A Friend in Deeds--This lesson unearths the importance of the connection between love and friendship, exploring the question of love's place within a friendship. (John 15:12-17; 1 Corinthians 13:4-8; 1 John 4:9-10)
Lesson 4: Dangerous Friends--This lesson cautions against the dangers friendship can bring, explaining the significance of and differences between healthy and unhealthy friendships. (Proverbs 1:5, 18-19, 22; 20:19; 22:24-25; 24:21-22; 28:7; 29:3; Psalm 101) |
