This four-week unit uses the film Dead Poets Society, which is about the students at Helton Academy, a strict prep school, and their new English teacher, John Keating. As a group of boys becomes intrigued with the ideas Mr. Keating is teaching them, they decide to reconvene The Dead Poets Society, a private group of which Mr. Keating was once a member. The film's main plot lies in the boys becoming freethinking individuals as they embrace Mr. Keating's teaching and the concept of seizing the day, or carpe diem.
Lesson 1: Seizing the Day:--God calls to be active Christians-to find his will for our lives and seize it. (Philippians 3:13-14; James 4:13-16)
Lesson 2: Walking Your Own Walk--God has a completely original and exciting plan for each of our lives, and he calls us not to conform but to be transformed into the people we are meant to be. (Romans 12:2)
Lesson 3: Obstacles in the Path--Following God's plan is not easy; perseverance and endurance are both key weapons needed to overcome obstacles when running toward the prize. (John 16:33 and Hebrews 12:1-3)
Lesson 4: Standing Up--Our very sins put Jesus on the cross, yet, just like the disciples, he continues to believe in us, calling us to stand on his behalf. (Matthew 28:16-20) |
