What does "copyright" mean?

Our nation's founding fathers determined that it was in the public interest that the creative works of a person's mind and spirit should belong, for a limited time, to the creator. The protection of these works is called "copyright". The United States Copyright Law grants to any copyright owner the exclusive rights to original material for a term, which is equal to the length of the life of the author/creator plus 70 years. For works written prior to 1978, the term is 95 years from the date the work was first published. The privilege of reproducing the work belongs to the copyright owner.

Copyright is the legal device that provides the creator of a work the right to control how the work is used (or person/entity to whom the creator has transferred all or part of her rights). A copyright is a type of property. Like other forms of property, a copyright may be sold by its owner, or otherwise exploited for his economic benefit.

What are the rights of copyright owners?

These are their rights:
  • To reproduce the copyrighted work in printed copies, electronic copies, or on recordings, video cassettes, or any duplicating process now known or which later comes into being.
  • To make alterations, arrangements, and adaptations of that copyrighted work.
  • To distribute and/or sell printed, electronic, or recorded copies of the work or to license others to do so.
  • To perform the copyrighted work.
  • To display the copyrighted work.

Who owns the legal right to make copies?

The original creators (authors and composers) and/or publishers, assigned agents, etc.

Must I get permission to make a photocopy of a copyrighted work for my accompanist in order to sing a solo?

YES. Unless stated otherwise by the owners of the copyrighted material, permission must be secured prior to any such use or duplication. For more details on this regarding materials posted on Barefootministries.com, see the "What are my rights as a member and purchaser of Barefootministries.com?" FAQ under the "Subscriptions, Account Information, and Privacy Policy" heading.

How do I know if the material I want to use has been copyrighted?

Copyright protection exists from the time the work is created in fixed form. The copyright in a work immediately becomes the property of the author who created the work. Most of the time the work will have the registered copyright symbol printed on it, but every work is protected by copyright regardless of whether the symbol is printed on the work or not. Only the author/creator or those deriving their rights through the author/creator can rightfully claim copyright. If any other party wants to reproduce the material in some manner, permission must be obtained. All materials on Barefootministries.com, despite the fact that they are electronic in format, are copyrighted materials and must be treated and used according to the usage policies set up in this FAQ section.

Do other countries have copyright laws?

Yes. Most of the world recognizes the need to give incentive and protection to creative persons. Copyrighted material owned by U.S. citizens is protected in many other countries by those countries' copyright laws and treaties with the United States.

When do I need to submit a request for permission to use excerpts or portions of material published by Barefoot Ministries?

Any time you are quoting more than 250 words from any Barefoot Ministries publication, written permission is required. PLEASE TAKE NOTE: Barefoot Ministries cannot give permission to use material that we do not own. To quote any footnoted material or material used by permission from a third party; you will need to contact the original publisher. This information is usually found within the text or in the acknowledgement section.

What if I want to reprint or copy old resources or out of print material?

If I have extra students and don't have enough materials to go around, can I photocopy the materials for those students?

How do I know if the material I want to use is in the public domain?

If the material you want to use was printed in the United States and the copyright date printed on the material is 1922 or earlier, copyright law provides that formal permission is not needed since the copyright has expired. We do recommend that to avoid accusations of plagiarism, the source should be correctly cited. You need to include the title, author, copyright date, and publisher.

If the copyright date is 1923 or newer, please send a permission request and Barefoot Ministries will notify you if the material has entered the public domain.

John Wesley's best-known writing on the subject of holiness, A Plain Account of Christian Perfection, is now rewritten for a new generation of Christians. In this new version, we learn how Brother Lawrence was able to recognize God in every detail of his life, and how his attitude and the whole way he approached life changed. We see how he began to live his life as a daily never ending conversation with God--and how it transformed him and those around him. For more information contact us at bfinquiry@barefootministries.com.

What is Sacred Space: Meditations for Common Places about?

Sacred Space: Meditations for Common Places blends the ancient practices of 12 stations of the cross and the "prayer path" and brings it into the everyday lives of youth and young adults. Inside these pages you will find everyday life settings. You will walk through meditations that can be practiced anywhere--the mall, a park, a campus, on a mission trip, or even at home. There are also traditional meditations and an explanation of how to set up a traditional prayer path for your group. If you have previously placed an order from Barefootministries.com or youthquiz.com, then you have already created a web site account that you can use on this site. Nazarene Publishing House handles all of Barefoot's billing and order fulfillment, therefore, if you have created an account on any of their family of web sites, you can use that account to place orders on this web site as well.

What if someone in my organization has already set up an account?

Organizational accounts, such as church accounts, may have multiple people who use them to order from our web site, however only one username and password per organization is permitted.

If someone from your organization has already setup a web site account on Barefootministries.com or youthquiz.com, but you do not know the username or password, there are a couple of ways you can pursue use of this account. If you know the account number for your organization, either from a packing list, invoice, or statement, then you may click on the Forgot your password? link on the Sign In page. From this page you may enter this account number and have the password sent to the organization's authorized e-mail address. You may also contact us at 1-866-355-9933 and with proper validation we can help you with your account.

If you are unsure whether someone in your organization has already created an account, you may go ahead and create an account for your organization, and we will review it. While your account is being reviewed, you may still place orders.

If you would like to create your own personal account, you may place orders for physical product, downloadables, or subscriptions on that account.

What if I forgot my password?

If you have previously created an account on barefootministries.com or youthquiz.com, but have forgotten your password then you can click the Forgot your password? link on the Sign In page. From this page you may enter your Nazarene Publishing House account number or your web site account username. You can then verify the email address for this account and request the password be sent.

What is a "Purchase Order Number"?

Some customers like to track a particular order through their own accounting processes, and, therefore, like to assign each order a unique identifying number. This number is known as a "purchase order number" or a "PO number" and is given at the time the order is placed. This purchase order number is then displayed on the order's packing list, as well as invoices and statements.

If your organization would like to require that all orders placed on your account must include a purchase order number, make sure the "Require a Purchase Order Number for all orders" setting on your account is set to "Yes".

To check your account's current setting, or to make changes to this setting: Begin by signing in to your account. From the "Welcome" page, select "Modify your Billing/Contact Information". This setting is located near the bottom of this screen.

For additional information, please contact Customer Service or call them at 1-866-355-9933.

• Your order number
• Email address

• Name of organization
• Name of person submitting the order
• Mark your fax "Attn: Accounts Receivable"

If my organization is tax exempt, will my online order reflect that exemption?

Though your organization is tax exempt, your online order will initially show tax:

  • If we do not have a current tax exempt certificate. When we receive and approve your tax exemption request, we can apply a tax credit to your order.

  • If you are establishing a web account for the first time and the new account has not yet been validated. If you have a tax-exempt NPH account established, the web account validation will recalculate sales tax based on your current exemption.

If I place an order on my personal account and the church makes payment, will the order be tax-exempt?

No. Your order must be charged to a tax-exempt organizational account in order to receive exemption. An order placed on a personal account and paid by a tax-exempt organization will not be exempt from tax.
